…..LAMENTS TANKER EXPLOSIONS, CHARGE AUTHORITIES TO REVIEW SAFETY RULES.
The Vice Chairman, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association Of Nigeria, (IPMAN), Ondo State chapter, Hon. Idowu Pius Adebusuyi has called on Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to consider a review of existing safety rules to avoid a recurrence of tanker explosion and falling of petrol tankers in the country.
Adebusuyi, who is also the Commissioner 1, in the Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission, made the call in Akure, while reacting to frequent falling of tanker and explosions in parts of the country.
He said the FRSC should intensify effort on the area of awareness towards achieving zero road accidents in the country
Recall that last month in Niger State, a petroleum tanker exploded and claimed the lives of 86 persons and injured 55 others.
The former lawmaker, explained that although there are already standard operating procedures and guidelines that should be adhered to in the sector, those rules may need to be given a second look.
“I think the most important thing is awareness. People should be aware of the danger that this poses, especially when there’s an accident like that, so they need to be aware of the dangers of explosions.
“FRSC need to create public awareness for people to avoid coming close in contact with the vicinity when accidents like this happen ” he noted.
Hon. Adebusuyi, an APC chieftain emphasized the need for collective action between other stakeholders in the oil sector such NUPENG, IPMAN in educating residents on the dangers inherent in scooping petroleum product on the road, with a focus on reducing road fatalities
The Ondo State IPMAN boss also said that there is the need for transport unions to partner in preventing road crashes and ensuring safer travels at all cost.
“Stakeholders should embark on sensitization campaigns too at motor parks and public places to promote a safe driving culture across the country.”
